The camera is my key to the secret garden, my way through the looking glass. Both moving in close and looking up from under reveal hidden worlds that keep me enthralled and in a constant state of wonder. I am also a writer and tend to turn inward for long periods of time while in the process. Photography balances this tendency by turning me outward, allowing me to see and interact with the world as it is right now and be mindful of each moment as it happens.
Photo manipulation is often an important part of my process and helps bring my vision to fruition when I see more in an image than is actually there. I have always wanted to be a painter, so manipulating images by extracting forms, adding textures, and enhancing colors allows me that deeply satisfying painterly experience.
My current creative work is taken and edited exclusively with the iPhone. True iPhoneography restricts any post-processing to the image other than that done within the iPhone itself. Because of the iPhone’s ability to connect to the web, iPhoneography is also a tool of global communication that allows interaction and community, while encouraging expansive creativity with deeply gratifying results.
I also shoot with a Rollei 6008, Nikon D7000, Polaroid Land Camera, and my homemade 4x5 pinhole camera.
